Truth is a knotty word. Hard to give a definition that captures all the possible ways we use the word. Which means that the conversations that we try to have about truth themselves become tangled and contentious. It’s tempting to abandon the concept—to claim that there is no such thing as truth, or that it is impossible to tell what’s true from what’s not. Maybe it doesn’t even matter?
But truth does matter. Because when people are confused about what’s real and what’s not, or when people can’t trust what they are being told, our common life begins to break down. Our relationships fall apart. Our society becomes polarized. Anger and hopelessness grow.
Of course, this is what our congregations are experiencing right now.
Welcome to ReclaimingTruth—a resource for preachers and others involved in the ministry of communications. Our goal is to jumpstart a conversation about the importance of truth in the pulpits and online presence of congregations across the U.S. We are not a website devoted to exploring particular “truths” or beliefs of different people of faith. Indeed, those of us who have contributed to this ecumenical site do not all share those in common. But what we do share in common is a strong conviction that truth matters, and that as people of faith we are called to seek truth, speak truthfully, and be true to one another.
